Ini Alasan Atlet Kerap Kunyah Permen Karet Saat Berlaga

Banyak orang yang gemar menyaksikan pertandingan olahraga baik secara langsung maupun lewat layar kaca.

Baik itu olahraga-olahraga populer seperti sepak bola maupun yang menggunakan media elektronik, yakni esport.

Meski begitu terkadang penonton kerap menjumpai atlet yang bertanding sedang mengunyah sesuatu saat bertanding.

Rupanya sesuatu tersebut ternyata adalah permen karet yang membuat mulut sang atlet terlihat ''sibuk''.

Kebiasaan mengonsumsi permen karet di kalangan atlet saat bertanding sudah menjadi hal yang biasa.

Namun ternyata masih banyak yang belum mengetahui alasan dibalik aktivitas tersebut.

Sejatinya ada beberapa alasan mengapa atlet kerap mengunyah permen karet saat bertanding.

 

Alasan yang pertama adalah untuk menstimulasi otak agar tak cepat lapar.

Atlet biasanya menghindari makan berat sebelum bertanding.

Pasalnya, tubuh membutuhkan energi untuk mencerna makanan yang sejatinya energi tersebut bisa dimaksimalkan untuk berlaga.

Akibatnya, sang atlet dapat kelelahan lebih cepat dari yang seharusnya karena ia mengeluarkan energi lebih saat bertanding.

Selain itu mengunyah permen karet disebut juga membantu atlet untuk fokus terhadap pertandingan.

Hal ini masih berhubungan dengan alasan yang pertama, sebab salah satu hal yang bisa merusak konsentrasi pemain adalah perut yang keroncongan.

Situasi tersebutlah yang membuat permen karet menjadi penolong saat pertandingan yang jelas sang atlet tak memiliki waktu untuk makan terlebih dahulu.

Alasan terakhir mengapa atlet doyan mengunyah permen karet saat bertanding adalah kemampuan permen karet itu sendiri untuk meningkatkan performa pemain.

Dalam penelitian yang bertajuk The Journal of Physical Therapy Science dan The Energy Expended in Gum Chewing, mengungkapkan bahwa mengunyah permen karet meningkatkan sejumlah fungsi fisik baik kepada pria maupun wanita.

Penelitian tersebut menyebut bahwa mengunyah permen karet saat berjalan dapat meningkatkan jarak berjalan kaki dan pengeluaran energi.

Beberapa alasan itulah yang membuat atlet gemar mengunyah permen karet saat berlaga.
